MOU between Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology and NIT Calicut

\

Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum (SCTIMST) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) today,11th of September 2018, for research collaboration in different health care fields of bio-medical, bio-informatics and bio-signal processing.

SCTIMST is an Institute of National Importance under the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. The Institute focuses on high quality, advanced treatment of cardiac and neurological disorders, indigenous development of technologies for biomedical devices and materials and public health training and research. Our faculty members are already having research activities with SCTIMST.

With this MOU, a new phase of research will be initiated to develop an APP to aid in managing anticoagulation in patients requiring oral anticoagulant drugs. SCTIMST will provide de-identified patient data (INR- International Normalized Ratio) Values, Diagnosis and range of INR required to NIT Calicut. NIT Calicut will develop an algorithm using artificial intelligence and machine learning. Once the algorithm is developed, SCTIMST will test it on INR values and compare with the physician prescribed values.

Finally the team aim to achieve a reasonable accuracy to have clinical utility, so that clinicians can test it on patients. Once the clinical utility is proven, it will be released for use for public as an APP.

This will immensely help people who are on anticoagulation drugs. With the system, 70% of the patients can avoid frequent hospital visits but can change the dosage of drugs even by visiting primary Health Centres where an expert cardiologist may not available. Dept. of Computer Science & Engg of NIT Calicut is planning to complete this project within a period of one year.

Dr.Harikrishnan Sivadasan Pillai, Professor, Cardiology, SCTIMST on behalf of Dr. Asha Kishore, Director, SCTIMST  has received the MOU, from  Dr Sivaji Chakravorti, Director, NIT Calicut in the presence of Registrar , Deans and other faculty members. Dr Jimmy Jose (Asso Professor, CSED) is the coordinator of the project.
